He is committed to embracing challenges and constantly pushing beyond his own comfort zones in business and in his personal life. This drive and determination has seen him tackling and succeeding in some of the world’s most extreme environments to compete in Endurance Ultra Marathon races.
Marathon des Sables 2007
The “Marathon des Sables” (MdeS) or Marathon of the Sands, deserves its’ title “The Toughest Footrace in the World”. Andy chose this as his debut to the world of extreme Ultra Marathons in 2007. Running 5 ½ Marathons back to back across the Sahara Desert in 6 days.
Namibian Desert 24hr Ultra Marathon 2008.
Across the Divide’s Namibian Desert 24hr Ultra marathon is shorter in distance than the MdeS, but physically tougher tocomplete, it is brutal. Running non stop from the heart of the Oldest Desert on the Planet it is 78 miles in 24 hours and competitors must endure 46°c from 11 am onwards. It is a supreme test of endurance. Andy came 2nd in the 2008 edition of the race, and had to dig deep to overcome fatigue induced hallucinations and a crippling case of Rhabdomyolysis. (The rapid breakdown of skeletal muscle).
Andy’s experience, led him to being invited to help BBC presenter Helen Skelton, in her preparations to successfully compete in The Namibian Desert 24 hr Ultra in 2009. Helen succeeded as the 2nd woman to finish the race, one of only 11 to succeed out of the 24 competitors who raced that year. Helen’s mental toughness and confidence then saw her establish 2 new world records whilst canoeing the entire length of the Amazon in 2010.
So what’s next for Andy?
On 16 Mar 2011 he will commence his toughest challenge yet, to run 66 Marathons in 66 consecutive days from each of the 66 official UK cities. There are 6 in Scotland, 5 in Ireland, 5 in Wales and 50 in England, and by undertaking this feat of epic proportions Andy will challenge the official Guinness World Record which currently rests at 52.
